BOLIVIA

Bolivia is a landlocked country in South America, bordering Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru. The west half of the country is dominated by the huge Andes mountains, with steep slopes and snow-capped peaks.

16 Days

Days 1–2: Santa Cruz – Lomas de Arena & Botanical Garden

Arrival at Viru Viru International Airport. Initial birding begins near the airport. Morning visits to Lomas de Arena and the Santa Cruz Botanical Garden.

Target species:
Red-winged Tinamou, Bolivian Slaty Antshrike, White-tailed Kite, Short-tailed Swift, Rusty-backed Spinetail, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Southern Yellowthroat, Black-backed Grosbeak, Red-legged Seriema, Green-barred Woodpecker, Fawn-breasted Wren.

 

Days 3–4: Los Volcanes (Concepción Area)

 

Stay at a scenic lodge near Amboró National Park. Birding around rocky cliffs and montane forest.

Target species:
Dusky-green Oropendola, Two-banded Warbler, Plush-crested Jay, Blue-browed Tanager, Bolivian Tapaculo, Slaty Gnateater, Black-streaked Puffbird, Sunbittern, Bolivian Recurvebill, Rufescent Screech Owl.

 

Day 5: Saipina – Samaipata

 

Bird the foothills and valleys around Samaipata.

Target species:
Bolivian Warbling Finch, Huayco Tinamou, Cream-backed Woodpecker, Screaming Cowbird, Spot-breasted Thornbird, Dot-fronted Woodpecker, Greater Wagtail-Tyrant.

 

Day 6: Samaipata – Quirusillas Forest

 

Early departure to a unique temperate forest.

Target species:
Red-faced Guan, Tucumán Amazon, Grey-crested Finch, Montane Screech Owl, Southern Narrow-billed Woodcreeper.

 

Day 7: Perereta – Red-fronted Macaw

 

A reliable area to photograph Red-fronted Macaws, one of Bolivia’s most iconic endemics.

Also seen: Cliff Parakeet, Bolivian Earthcreeper, Bolivian Blackbird, Chaco Puffbird, Andean Condor (possible).

 

Day 8: Siberia Cloud Forest

 

Cool, misty cloud forest birding.

Target species:
Rufous-faced Antpitta, White-browed Brushfinch, Ringed Warbling Finch, Black-winged Parrot, Buff-banded Tyrannulet.

 

Day 9: Cerro Tunari

 

Visit the high Andes for endemics and high-elevation specialists.

Target species:
Cochabamba Mountain Finch, Red-tailed Comet, Wedge-tailed Hillstar, Puna Tapaculo, Cinereous Ground-Tyrant, Mountain Parakeet.

 

Day 10–11: Cochabamba – Corani & Chapare

 

Bird upper and lower Chapare and humid Andean forests.

Target species:
Bolivian Antpitta, Black-hooded Sunbeam, Versicolored Barbet, Blue-banded Toucanet, Yellow-rumped Antwren.

 

Day 12: Flight to La Paz – Lake Titicaca

 

Transfer to Huarina on the lake’s shore.

Target species:
Titicaca Grebe, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Andean Goose, Spot-winged Pigeon, Puna Teal, Plumbeous Rail.

 

Day 13: Desaguadero – Border Area

 

Continue birding around the southern shore of Lake Titicaca.

Target species:
Berlepsch's Canastero, Andean Avocet, James’s (Puna) Flamingo, Andean Flamingo.

 

Days 14–15: La Paz – Upper & Lower Coroico Road

 

A highlight of the tour: a scenic descent from high Andean puna to Yungas cloud forest.

Target species:
Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Hooded Mountain-Toucan, Diademed Tapaculo, Orange-browed Hemispingus, Yungas Dove, Buff-thighed Puffleg, Scimitar-winged Piha, Bolivian Brushfinch, Citrine Warbler, Short-tailed Finch.

 

Day 16: Departure

 

Flight to home from El Alto International Airport (La Paz), or continue with an extension.
