Uganda Pearl of Africa 16 Days

(Key Endemics & Highlights – Shoebill, Albertine Rift Endemics, Chimpanzees, Gorillas)

 

Day 1 – Arrival in Entebbe

Activities: Arrival, airport pickup, hotel check-in. Optional afternoon birding at Entebbe Botanical Gardens (time permitting).

 

Target Birds: African Hobby, Ross’s Turaco, Orange Weaver, Klaas’s Cuckoo, Brown Parrot, Black-headed Gonolek.

 

Overnight: Entebbe

 

Day 2 – Mabamba Swamp (Shoebill Day)

Activities: Morning transfer to Mabamba Swamp for canoe birding in search of the legendary Shoebill.

 

Target Birds: Shoebill, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Allen’s Gallinule, Lesser Jacana, Orange Weaver.

 

Overnight: Entebbe

 

Day 3 – Lake Mburo National Park

Activities: Transfer to Lake Mburo NP with birding stops en route; afternoon birding in the park.

 

Target Birds: Red-faced Barbet, African Finfoot, Rufous-bellied Heron, Brown-chested Plover, Papyrus Yellow Warbler.

 

Overnight: Lake Mburo

 

Day 4 – Lake Mburo & Drive to Mbarara

Activities: Morning bird walk or optional boat trip; slow transfer to Mbarara area to break up the long journey.

 

Target Birds: Long-tailed Cisticola, White-winged Black Tit, Black-collared Barbet.

 

Overnight: Mbarara

 

Day 5 – Drive to Kisoro (Mgahinga Region)

Activities: Scenic transfer to Kisoro, with birding stops through hilly southwestern Uganda.

 

Target Birds: Augur Buzzard, African Stonechat, Bronzy Sunbird.

 

Overnight: Kisoro

 

Day 6 – Mgahinga Gorilla NP (Albertine Endemics)

Activities: Full-day birding the Gorge Trail on Mt. Sabyinyo, targeting highland Albertine Rift specialties.

 

Target Birds: Rwenzori Turaco, Kivu Ground Thrush, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Rwenzori Batis, White-starred Robin.

 

Overnight: Kisoro

 

Day 7 – Echuya Forest to Ruhija (Bwindi Impenetrable NP)

Activities: Morning birding in Echuya Forest; transfer to Ruhija.

 

Target Birds: African Green Broadbill, Handsome Francolin, Dusky Crimsonwing, Mountain Yellow Warbler.

 

Overnight: Ruhija

 

Day 8 – Mubwindi Swamp (Bwindi-Ruhija)

Activities: Full-day hike and birding at Mubwindi Swamp.

 

Target Birds: African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, Stripe-breasted Tit, Regal Sunbird, Strange Weaver.

 

Overnight: Ruhija

 

Day 9 – The Neck to Buhoma (Lower Bwindi)

Activities: Birding along “The Neck” as you descend to Buhoma sector.

 

Target Birds: Red-throated Alethe, Black Bee-eater, Many-colored Bushshrike, Dwarf Honeyguide, Narina Trogon.

 

Overnight: Buhoma

 

Day 10 – Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi (Buhoma Sector)

Activities: Early morning gorilla tracking experience (permit required). Leisure birding after.

 

Target Birds: African Broadbill, Elliot’s Woodpecker, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Buff-spotted Woodpecker.

 

Overnight: Buhoma

 

Day 11 – Drive to Queen Elizabeth NP + Kazinga Channel Cruise

Activities: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth NP; afternoon boat cruise on Kazinga Channel.

 

Target Birds: African Skimmer, Water Thick-knee, Gull-billed Tern, Marsh Sandpiper. Also expect Hippos, Elephants, Crocodiles.

 

Overnight: Queen Elizabeth NP

 

Day 12 – Birding in Queen Elizabeth NP; Transfer to Fort Portal

Activities: Morning game and birding drive in the park; continue to Fort Portal.

 

Target Birds: Harlequin Quail, Temminck’s Courser, Martial Eagle, Amur Falcon, African Crake.

 

Overnight: Fort Portal

 

Day 13 – Semliki Forest

Activities: Full day birding in the lush lowland Semliki Forest – a biodiversity hotspot.

 

Target Birds: Congo Serpent Eagle, Black Dwarf Hornbill, White-crested Hornbill, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Pale-fronted Nigrita.

 

Overnight: Fort Portal

 

Day 14 – Kibale Forest (Birding + Chimp Tracking)

Activities: Morning birding in Kibale Forest; afternoon chimpanzee tracking experience.

 

Target Birds: Green-breasted Pitta, Red-tailed Ant-Thrush, Black-billed Turaco, White-naped Pigeon.

 

Primates: Chimpanzees, Red-tailed Monkey, L’Hoest’s Monkey, Olive Baboon.

 

Overnight: Kibale Area

 

Day 15 – Kibale to Entebbe (Birding en route)

Activities: Scenic transfer back to Entebbe with birding stops en route.

 

Target Birds: African Grey Parrot, Great Blue Turaco, Crowned Hornbill.

 

Overnight: Entebbe

 

Day 16 – Departure

Activities: Morning at leisure or optional local birding (depending on flight time). Transfer to airport for international departure.
